Historical Societies

Historical Society of Montgomery County, PA
On May 11, 1883, the flourishing historical society was chartered: “To preserve the civil, political, and religious history of the county and to promote the study of history”.

Historical Society of Whitpain
The object of this Society shall be to develop a greater interest, knowledge and support of the history of Whitpain Township and to preserve, acquire and restore memorials, historical buildings and landmarks in said township.

Franconia Historical Society
The Franconia Historical Society, founded in 2002, is dedicated to preserving the rich local heritage of Franconia Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The major function of the Society is to educate the public about the history of Franconia Township.

Germantown Historical Society
Founded in 1901 as the Site and Relic Society of Germantown, the Germantown Historical Society is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and interpreting the rich and diverse history of the historic German Township (now Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill) in northwest Philadelphia.

The Historical Society of Trappe
The Historical Society of Trappe was founded in 1964 as a non-profit educational society to: encourage local historical research and publication of the results, promote historical activities in the community, and encourage the preservation of historic sites.

Peter Wentz Farmstead Society
The mission of the Peter Wentz Farmstead Society is to preserve and interpret an 18th century Pennsylvania German farmstead, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, by stimulating public interest and support of the site’s heritage through educational programs and public events focusing on the architecture, crafts, customs and furnishings of the period.

Chestnut Hill Historical Society
Since 1967, the Chestnut Hill Historical Society has promoted the preservation of Chestnut Hill’s extraordinary architectural heritage and natural setting. Through lively programs, tours and exhibits, and the restoration of threatened buildings, the historical society has helped to keep the past alive for future generations. Today, the historical society preserves the integrity of the Chestnut Hill Historic District (placed on the National Register by the society in 1985) by protecting key structures, open space, and the community’s village character.

Wissahickon Valley Historical Society
Founded in 1975, The Wissahickon Historical Society’s purpose is to preserve the local historical buildings, artifacts and folklore of the historic Wissahickon Valley.

The Goschenhoppen Historians Inc.
Goschenhoppen is one of the oldest continuously existing Pennsylvania German communities in America. The Goschenhoppen Historians Inc., was founded in 1964 in order to preserve the folk culture of the area’s earliest immigrant settlers, known as the Pennsylvania Germans.

The Pennsylvania German Society
The Pennsylvania German Society is a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the study of the Pennsylvania German people and their 300-year history in America.

Mennonite Historians of Eastern Pennsylvania
The Mennonite Heritage Center tells the story of Mennonite faith and life in southeastern Pennsylvania. Its architecture, with lines modeling the simplicity of traditional Pennsylvania Mennonite meetinghouses, points towards the spiritual center of Mennonite life. The concept was that “church” was congregation, not the building in which they “met.” The building also suggests rural images of mill, barn and house, while exhibits show the movement toward a more urban society, giving contemporary expression to a deep-rooted heritage.

The Speaker’s House: The Home of Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg – Trappe, PA
The mission of Save the Speaker’s House, Inc. is to restore, preserve, and interpret the home of Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg, first and third Speaker of the U.S. House, and to promote an understanding of leadership and American history and culture through research and educational programming.
