Skippack Architecture

The early settlers who came to the Skippack region brought their crafts and skills with them. Many of them were from the Dusseldorf area of Germany. They built stone homes, mills, and wooden and stone barns along the Skippack Creek.

The Skippack region contains one of the largest groups of historic structures west of Philadelphia ranging from houses and inns to mills and churches. Some have been restored and are in daily use as restaurants and commercial establishments while others are in various stages of disrepair.

Many of these structures were built before the Revolutionary war and date back to the early 1700’s. There are quite a few buildings that exist today that George Washington and his troops saw as they marched through the area, camping on several occasions along Skippack Creek and the Skippack Road, on the way to and from the Battle at Germantown.

The Skippack Historical Society has been researching many of these structures and historic sites throughout the region over the years and has prepared a report of the many houses in Evansburg State Park.
