And how did the Continental Army’s decision to spend the winter of 1777–1778 there shape the course of the American Revolution? \nJoin historian and encampment guide Ken Gavin for an engaging historical program exploring the circumstances behind one of the most recognized chapters of the American Revolution. Drawing on primary source materials\, Ken will look beyond the familiar stories of hardship and perseverance to examine two important questions: \nWhy did the Continental Army encamp its main force at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777–1778? \nWhat was the impact of the army’s presence in that particular location? \nWhile traditional narratives often focus on what happened during the Valley Forge encampment\, this program will explore the complex social\, political\, economic\, and strategic factors that made Valley Forge the most viable choice for Washington and the Continental Army. \nAttendees will discover how geography\, military strategy\, regional resources\, political considerations\, and the broader war effort influenced the decision—and how the army’s presence at Valley Forge ultimately provided significant strategic and foreign-policy benefits to the Patriot cause. \nWhether you are a lifelong student of Revolutionary history or simply curious about the story behind one of Pennsylvania’s most important historic places\, this program offers a deeper look at why Valley Forge mattered.
