501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Status

The Skippack Historical Society has 501(c)(3) federal tax exempt status.

The designation "501c3" refers to the section of US Tax Code that deals with tax exempt organizations. Tax-exempt organizations do not pay federal corporate income taxes.

An organization receiving a "501(c)(3) status" gains certain privileges and obligations. A 501(c)(3) organization is exempt from paying federal income taxes, but may be required to file annual income information. All persons and organizations that make contributions to a 501(c)(3) organization will be able to claim deductions from their federal tax for their donations to the organization.

In order to be exempt under § 501(c)(3), an organization must prove that it meets the following tests:

(1) It must be organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes;

(2) Its net income must not be used, in whole or in part, to the benefit of private shareholders or individuals;

(3) It must not as any substantial part of its activities attempt to influence legislation by propaganda or otherwise except for certain lobbying activities.
