230th Anniversary of

General Washingtons Camp

at Skippack

Revolutionary Camp & Crafters

Saturday and Sunday

v      Revolutionary troops will arrive to set up camp. Talk to the soldiers, see their equipment and learn about their duties. Get a sense of the life of a soldier at the actual encampment here in the Skippack village area, Sept. 29th to October 2, 1777. Bring your camera!

v      See a 1700’s printing press demonstration, and learn the craft of writing with a feather-quill pen. Kids can give it a try!

v      Walk along with a dowser as he searches the farm for water or other objects below ground.

v      See the old fashioned vat and long stirrer used to make apple butter. Apple butter and cider available for purchase.

v      See a large collection of toys of the 1700 – 1800’s. Kids can try a few!  See inside a replica of a one room schoolhouse.

v      Civil War veterans are also remembered. Visit their camp to hear stories of that campaign..

Saturday  -  September 29th -  10 am to 5pm

v      Revolutionary fife and drummer will be performing today between 2:30 & 4:00 pm.

v      Ask question of local author, John Ruth, a respected author of many books on local heritage and the Mennonite culture. Take time to hear him tell of the ordeals of Skippack area settlers during Colonial times, and the struggles for peace. (1:00 to 2pm)

v      Join the troops afterwards for some time around the campfire. Sit, relax, and hear their stories.

Sunday  -  September 30th  -  11 am to 4 pm

v      Watch a stone-cutter at work, carving old style tombstones!

v      Visit with Betsy Ross, see her making a flag. Kids will enjoy making stars with Betsy! (12 -2pm)

v      See the Revolutionary artifact collection of a local researcher, actually found in the area. Ask him about his discovery of the army’s artillery park at their camp at Skippack village, in 1777.

v      A basket-maker will show her craft to kids and adults.
